Program Description

Perry, ME

The beautiful sea in Perry, ME

Designed for the  mental healthcare professional, this is an experientially-based workshop that will provide  an introduction to the Moving Stories play therapy method.  The Moving Stories play therapy method is an intermodal expressive arts approach that integrates –story, sandtray and play therapy.

Therapeutic stories are told with the aid of a Moving Stories kit and a sandtray as the “theater”.  Moving Stories kits are baskets or decorated boxes that contain miniatures/symbols that are used to tell the story. Individual clients, families, groups or classes from pre-school age to old age are then invited to reflect upon the stories followed by an invitation to respond in their own creative way. The method can be utilized by a wide range of theoretical orientations that permit some directive interaction on the part of the therapist.

This workshop will provide participants with the background needed in play therapy, sandtray therapy and therapeutic story-telling to begin using this powerful tool. The workshop is designed to be both instructive and personally meaningful.

Participants

This workshop is designed for the helping professional (e.g. School Counselor, Social Worker, Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor) with some experience or interest in play therapy, sandtray therapy and bibliotherapy.  The Moving Stories Method is particularly useful for those working with children and in school systems.  Skills will be applicable to individual, family, group and classroom contexts.

Objectives

  1. Participants will experience the power of play, sandtray and story through their own experience with the Moving Stories play therapy method.
  2. Participants will understand how to create a Wonder Room–the three dimensional library/play room to house Moving Stories play therapy kits.
  3. Participants will be introduced to the skills needed in play, sandtray and therapeutic storytelling needed in the Moving Stories play therapy method.
  4. Participants will learn how to create their own Moving Stories play therapy kits and Wonder Rooms.
