A Systems Approach to School-Based Play Therapy for Traumatized Children (4 CEU’s)

Play Therapy for traumatized children in rural schools can be amplified through a systems approach that includes consultation with teachers and school systems and by expanding our view of “systems” to include nature, a readily available and under-utilized resource in play therapy.  This workshop will provide school consultation tools and ideas for utilizing nature in school-based play therapy for traumatized children.

  1. 1. Participants will learn a systemic approach to school-based play therapy for traumatized children.
  2. 2. Participants will learn how to use the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) study as a starting point for trauma-informed play therapy consultation with staff in the school system.
  3. 3. Participants will learn about the Transforming Rural Experience in Education (TREE Model), which combines the ACEs Childhood Experiences Study, the neurobiology of toxic stress, and resilience research to create school environments where ALL students can learn and grow.
  4. 4. Participants will learn ways to use nature in school-based play therapy to address the effects of trauma in the body, mind, heart and spirit of traumatized children.

Healing Stories in Play Therapy (2 CEU’s)

How can we transform our own adverse childhood experiences into healing for children in play therapy?  This experiential workshop will introduce participants to the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) scale and invite reflection, writing, sharing and finally, creative avenues for healing in our life and work.

  1. 1. Participants will learn about the long-term health effects of adverse childhood experiences across the lifespan and the role of story-making in play therapy.
  2. 2. Participants will take the ACEs and have the opportunity to write and share about a childhood experience and how this might impact their work in play therapy.
  3. 3. Participants will review 2 creative examples (an art book and Pocket Time by Sally Waites) and see  how adverse childhood experiences can be transformed into creative expression and healing in play therapy.
